** Available for local pick-up or hand delivery only. (If you are local to NYC hand-delivery is free for $150+ purchases!)**
Hand-carved alabaster marble on a black and gray marble base, 19 1/2 in tall, 8 1/2 in wide at base, 20.4 lbs
Condition: There is an old cream colored repair on the alabaster base to the left of the lady's foot. (See last photo) Otherwise, the carved marble sculpture is in beautiful antique condition, with an expected amount of wear including minor scuffing and nicks.
The subject of this piece has its roots in ancient art, in which Greek and Roman goddesses and maidens were sometimes depicted reaching down to delicately tie a sandal. In the 19th century there was a great revival of interest in Classical motifs, from art and architecture to clothing and hairstyles. This sculpture is a beautiful example of Classical revival in the Victorian era.
